Start Them Young Into Healthy Living
More and more parents all over the world are keen for their children to do yoga. Yoga does not only help with their strength and flexibility, but also with their overall helping them with their overall holistic development.
Young children, pre-teens and teenagers have different needs of yoga based on their physical and mental development.
In the 4-10 age group,
-
Bones and joints are still forming and highly flexible but also vulnerable
-
Gross motor skills (running, jumping, balancing) are still being developed
-
Fine motor control is limited — precise alignments are too demanding
-
Short bursts of energy followed by rest — stamina is low
-
Proprioception (body awareness in space) is still developing
-
Short attention spans — activities need to change every few minutes
While in the 10-14 age group,
-
Puberty begins, bringing rapid bone growth — muscles and tendons can temporarily tighten as bones lengthen faster than soft tissue
-
This actually makes them less flexible than younger children during growth spurts
-
Greater stamina and ability to hold poses for longer
-
More developed coordination and body awareness
-
Girls and boys begin to diverge physically, which can affect confidence in group settings
-
Beginning to think more abstractly and analytically, and are capable of longer focus and more structured sequences
The classes for young children, pre-teens and early teens need special consideration based on the above factors; while the classes for adults have different needs.
I welcome everyone above 10+ yrs to join their parent in the yoga practice. Children under 10 can also join. Each child is different, so I will let the parent/guardian to make a judgement whether they want to bring based on individual personality, attention span, and ability to focus.
I began doing yoga with my grandfather when I was 8 year old. And the muscles amazingly retain some memories from then, that's why I think my body finds shoulder stand so easy and natural.
I run yoga classes for young children with a charity, TSP, where my 11 year old daughter leads the session and helps other children correct their pose.
Prices reflect my mission to encourage children into the realm of Yoga.
